I recently engaged one of our practice members in a discussion regarding the reasons that they get a flu shot. I was intrigued, because the majority of people that come to a Chiropractic Wellness practice are already living on the, "I don't get a flu shot" side of the fence. The simple answer as to why this person got a flu shot was, "my medical doctor told me I should have one." This person could not fathom why their medical doctor would recommend something that was "not good" for them.

 

They point blank asked me, "Why would my doctor give me something that was not good for me." I honestly answered, "I don't know."

 

I like doctors and other professionals that lead and guide me and my family with information, knowledge, and education and therefore help decisions to be made, by evaluating and explaining all of the different options.

Healthcare has unfortunately been at a crossroads for a number of years. The consumer drives the marketplace and unfortunately the healthcare consumer in the U.S. is being marketed. The target market for something like the flu shot is every citizen. So one way of getting every citizen to buy something is offering it everywhere and advertising it. Respected agencies also can create a market place by throwing around terms like pandemic and statistical analysis. News stories could run about this year's flu season and next thing we know a local politician could sponsor "free" flu shots. Everything that I just mentioned has already happened this year and last year; in fact my local grocery chain has $30 flu shots at its pharmacy that would be discounted to $20 with the bonus savings card. I of course inquired if I had to buy 4 to qualify...seriously I did!

The question I have for you is; are you a customer of the paradigm we have in the U.S. which is Health Scare and sickness based reactivity, or are you a volunteer for health and wellness?

The simple action is that we must acquire knowledge. Our country's health is amongst the worst in the world. I am not talking about the system and costs, which is a nightmare in amongst itself. I am speaking plainly about the paradigm. A practice member once described it to me as, "Drug 'em, cut 'em or tell them they are crazy." Statistically speaking, yes we prescribe and consume more medications and we do have more hospitals performing more surgeries than anywhere else in the world. If this were the formula for good health, vitality and wellness, then we would have the best health in the world, sadly we do not.
